Mental Health Patient Woman Severely Burned in Udaipur – Over 80% Burns, Referred to GB Hospital

Independent Corresponden | 5 August 2025:

A woman suffering from mental illness was severely burned in a tragic incident on Tuesday in Udaipur, Tripura. The victim has been identified as Shilpi Bhattacharjee, a resident of Agriculture Chowmuni in Udaipur and the wife of Bikash Bhattacharjee from Jatanbari.

According to sources, Shilpi and Bikash were married 13 years ago, and for the initial years, the couple lived peacefully. However, for the past few years, Shilpi had been battling mental health issues and undergoing treatment.

Just a day before the incident, Shilpi’s father-in-law had brought her to her maternal home in Udaipur, handing over all necessary medicines and asking her to stay there for a few days to rest.

On Tuesday morning, her mother helped her with a bath and meals before stepping out for some errands. A little while later, locals heard screams and rushed in — only to find Shilpi engulfed in flames.

Fire services were immediately alerted, and a rescue team rushed Shilpi to Gomati District Hospital. Attending doctors confirmed that over 80% of her body had been burned. She was given initial treatment and then referred to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala for further care due to the critical nature of her condition.

Upon hearing about the incident, police arrived at the scene and began an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Whether it was an accident or a result of mental health complications is yet to be confirmed.

This shocking and heartbreaking incident has left the local community stunned and once again raised questions about the care and safety of mentally ill patients at home.
