Independent Reporter, 15 July:
The rebel paramilitary forces in war-torn Sudan have carried out a brutal massacre, killing at least 300 people including women and children. According to reports, the attack took place in a village in the Darfur region, which has been witnessing intense violence since the internal conflict escalated.
Eyewitnesses said that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a powerful paramilitary group, surrounded the village and opened fire indiscriminately. Many houses were set on fire, forcing families to flee for their lives. Several women and children who could not escape were shot dead or burnt alive.
The UN and humanitarian agencies have condemned the killings, terming it as a possible genocide. They have called for urgent international intervention to protect civilians trapped amid ongoing clashes between the Sudanese army and rebel forces.
Sudan has been in turmoil since fighting broke out last year between the military and the RSF over control of power. The conflict has displaced millions and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
Local sources have said that the bodies of victims are still lying on roads and in burnt houses as rescue and relief teams are unable to reach the affected area due to continuous shelling and armed clashes nearby.
The international community has urged both warring sides to immediately cease hostilities and allow humanitarian access to provide medical aid, food, and shelter to the affected people.
