The national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ is written in Bengali. A recent comment by the Delhi Police regarding the Bengali language has sparked nationwide controversy and outrage. The disparaging remark made by the Delhi Police against Bengali has drawn sharp criticism from political circles.
Tripura’s Leader of the Opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, has strongly reacted to the incident. In his statement, he said:
In the Hindutva-driven political project of the RSS-BJP, no Indian language other than Hindi is given any respect. They are obsessed with the dream of establishing a so-called Hindu Rashtra, where India’s multilingual and multicultural heritage is being ignored. Even the language in which the national anthem is written—Bengali—is now being viewed with disdain.
According to Jitendra Chaudhury, language is not just a medium of communication—it is a cultural identity of a nation. Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Jana Gana Mana’ symbolizes the emotion, unity, and uniqueness of this country. Any disrespect shown to the anthem or its language is a grave insult to the Constitution and the national pride of India.
He further added, “This kind of mindset is contrary to the core principles of India’s constitutional diversity and linguistic equality. The BJP-RSS language policy is creating a divisive atmosphere among various linguistic communities in the country.”
This incident has reignited the broader debate around the status and respect for regional languages, including Bengali. The silence of the central government has also come under criticism from the opposition camp.
