Tragedy struck Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand as a devastating cloudburst triggered a massive flash flood, washing away homes, hotels, and roads across multiple villages. The disaster struck in the dead of night, leaving residents little time to react. As of now, at least 50 people are reported missing, and rescue teams fear the toll may rise.
According to local sources, the villages of Gangad and Dunga were among the worst hit. Torrential rain triggered a sudden surge of water from the surrounding hills, engulfing everything in its path — vehicles, homes, and public infrastructure. Entire settlements have been swept away, and several buildings collapsed due to the sheer force of the water.
Emergency response teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Army personnel, have been deployed. Rescue operations are underway with the help of helicopters and drones scanning inaccessible areas for survivors. Officials confirmed that many people are believed to be trapped under debris, and efforts are ongoing to pull them out safely.
Eyewitnesses described terrifying scenes:
“The sound of the rain was deafening, but no one expected this. Within minutes, water was everywhere — houses were gone, people were screaming, it was chaos.”
The Meteorological Department has warned of further heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, increasing the risk of more landslides and flash floods. Authorities have evacuated vulnerable areas and imposed a temporary ban on tourist movement in the affected regions.
The state government has pledged immediate relief and compensation to affected families. Chief Minister [Name] is closely monitoring the situation and has assured that all necessary support will be provided.
This tragic incident once again highlights the increasing frequency of extreme weather events linked to climate change and unplanned development in ecologically fragile zones.
